CVE-2017-15536: An issue was discovered in Cloudera Data Science Workbench (CDSW) 1.x before 1.2.0.

An issue was discovered in Cloudera Data Science Workbench (CDSW) 1.x before 1.2.0. Several web application vulnerabilities allow malicious authenticated users of CDSW to escalate privileges in CDSW. CDSW users can exploit these vulnerabilities in combination to gain root access to CDSW nodes, gain access to the CDSW database which includes Kerberos keytabs of CDSW users and bcrypt hashed passwords, and gain access to other privileged information such as session tokens, invitation tokens, and environment variables.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2017-15536 affects Cloudera Data Science Workbench 1.x before 1.2.0. A malicious authenticated CDSW user could escalate from normal access to root on CDSW nodes and reach sensitive platform data, including credentials, tokens, and environment variables.

Executive priority

Treat as high priority if CDSW 1.x before 1.2.0 is present. The issue can turn authenticated user access into infrastructure-level compromise and exposure of credentials used beyond the application.

Technical view

The CVE describes multiple CDSW web application vulnerabilities that can be combined by authenticated users to escalate privileges, obtain root node access, and access the CDSW database containing Kerberos keytabs, bcrypt password hashes, session tokens, invitation tokens, and environment variables.

Likely exposure

Exposure is limited to organizations running Cloudera Data Science Workbench 1.x before 1.2.0, especially environments with multiple authenticated CDSW users. The sources do not identify other products or versions.

Exploitation context

The provided sources require attacker authentication and do not state active exploitation. CISA KEV status is false in the supplied bundle, so there is no source-backed evidence here of known exploited activity.

Researcher notes

The bundle provides no CVSS, CWE, exploit publication, or detailed root-cause breakdown. Analysis should stay anchored to the CVE description and Cloudera bulletin, with validation focused on version exposure, authenticated user risk, and secret compromise impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify any CDSW 1.x deployments below version 1.2.0.
  • Review Cloudera security bulletin guidance for the affected CDSW release.
  • Upgrade to CDSW 1.2.0 or later where applicable.
  • Rotate exposed CDSW credentials, keytabs, tokens, and secrets if compromise is suspected.
  • Limit CDSW user access to trusted accounts until remediation is complete.

Validation and detection

  • Inventory CDSW versions across all nodes and environments.
  • Confirm whether any deployment is earlier than CDSW 1.2.0.
  • Review CDSW user accounts for unnecessary authenticated access.
  • Check logs for suspicious privilege changes or database access.
  • Assess whether tokens, keytabs, or environment secrets need rotation.
