CVE-2017-14616: An FBX-5312 issue was discovered in WatchGuard Fireware before 12.0.

An FBX-5312 issue was discovered in WatchGuard Fireware before 12.0. If a login attempt is made in the XML-RPC interface with an XML message containing an empty member element, the wgagent crashes, logging out any user with a session opened in the UI. By continuously executing the failed login attempts, UI management of the device becomes impossible.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2017-14616 is a denial-of-service issue in WatchGuard Fireware before 12.0. A malformed XML-RPC login attempt can crash the wgagent process, forcing UI users out. Repeated attempts can make device web management unusable, affecting firewall administration during operations or incidents. Organizations are likely exposed if they still run WatchGuard Fireware earlier than 12.0 and expose the XML-RPC or UI management plane to untrusted networks. The source bundle does not identify specific models, CPEs, or deployment defaults. Treat this as a management availability risk, not confirmed device takeover. Prioritize remediation for internet-exposed or remotely administered firewalls because loss of UI control can slow incident response and operational changes. Mitigation focus: Upgrade WatchGuard Fireware to version 12.0 or later.; Check WatchGuard guidance for affected models and recommended upgrade paths.; Restrict management interfaces to trusted administrative networks only..
