CVE-2017-12252: A vulnerability in the Cisco FindIT Network Discovery Utility could allow an authenticated, local attacker...

A vulnerability in the Cisco FindIT Network Discovery Utility could allow an authenticated, local attacker to perform a DLL preloading attack, potentially causing a partial impact to device availability, confidentiality, and integrity. The vulnerability is due to the application loading a malicious copy of a specific, nondefined DLL file instead of the DLL file it was expecting. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by placing an affected DLL within the search path of the host system. An exploit could allow the attacker to load a malicious DLL file into the system, thus partially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCve89785.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Cisco FindIT has a DLL preloading flaw that could let a logged-in local attacker make the utility load malicious code. This is not described as remotely exploitable, but it can partially affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability on systems where the utility is installed. Exposure is likely limited to endpoints or servers with Cisco FindIT installed where an attacker already has authenticated local access. Internet-facing exposure is not supported by the provided sources. Treat this as a moderate endpoint-hardening issue, not an emergency remote-exploitation event. Prioritize systems where Cisco FindIT runs on shared administrator workstations or broadly accessible hosts. Mitigation focus: Check Cisco advisory guidance for affected and fixed software details.; Upgrade or remove Cisco FindIT where vendor guidance recommends it.; Restrict local user access on systems running Cisco FindIT..
