CVE-2017-11466: Arbitrary file upload vulnerability in com/dotmarketing/servlets/AjaxFileUploadServlet.class in dotCMS 4.1....

Arbitrary file upload vulnerability in com/dotmarketing/servlets/AjaxFileUploadServlet.class in dotCMS 4.1.1 allows remote authenticated administrators to upload .jsp files to arbitrary locations via directory traversal sequences in the fieldName parameter to servlets/ajax_file_upload. This results in arbitrary code execution by requesting the .jsp file at a /assets URI.

Security readout for executives and security teams

dotCMS 4.1.1 had an authenticated administrator file-upload flaw that could let an admin place a JSP file in a web-accessible location and execute server-side code. This is most urgent where admin accounts are exposed, shared, weakly protected, or potentially compromised. Exposure is limited by the stated need for authenticated administrator access, but dotCMS 4.1.1 systems with internet-accessible admin functions or compromised admin credentials face serious risk. Treat this as high priority for any remaining dotCMS 4.1.1 environment. The flaw requires admin access, but successful abuse can become server code execution, making credential compromise or exposed admin access especially consequential. Mitigation focus: Identify any dotCMS 4.1.1 deployments.; Check dotCMS vendor guidance and issue 12131 for fixed or supported upgrade paths.; Restrict administrative access to trusted networks and users..
