CVE-2017-10268: Vulnerability in the MySQL Server component of Oracle MySQL (subcomponent: Server: Replication).

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server component of Oracle MySQL (subcomponent: Server: Replication). Supported versions that are affected are 5.5.57 and earlier, 5.6.37 and earlier and 5.7.19 and earlier. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where MySQL Server executes to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 4.1 (Confidentiality impacts). Analyst readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2017-10268 is a MySQL Server replication-component flaw that can let a highly privileged local attacker read critical database data. It is not described as remotely exploitable and requires logon to the infrastructure where MySQL runs. Business risk is mainly confidential data exposure from older MySQL deployments.

Executive priority

Treat as a scheduled but important remediation item for legacy MySQL estates. It is lower urgency than remotely exploitable database bugs, but confidentiality impact can be severe if an attacker already has privileged host access.

Technical view

Oracle lists affected MySQL Server versions as 5.5.57 and earlier, 5.6.37 and earlier, and 5.7.19 and earlier. The CVSS vector is local, high complexity, high privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, high confidentiality impact, and no integrity or availability impact.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in legacy MySQL Server installations, especially systems still running affected 5.5, 5.6, or 5.7 versions and using vendor packages referenced by Oracle, Debian, Red Hat, or NetApp advisories.

Exploitation context

The provided sources do not show active exploitation, and the CVE is not listed as CISA KEV. Exploitation requires a high-privileged attacker with local infrastructure logon, so this is mainly a post-access data exposure risk rather than an internet-edge emergency.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are local attack vector, high attack complexity, and high privileges required. Available evidence identifies affected versions and confidentiality impact, but the bundle does not provide exploit details or a standalone workaround beyond vendor updates.

Mitigation direction

  • Inventory MySQL Server versions across production and support systems.
  • Apply relevant Oracle, Debian, Red Hat, or NetApp security updates.
  • Prioritize upgrades for affected 5.5, 5.6, and 5.7 deployments.
  • Restrict administrative and shell access on database hosts.
  • Review vendor guidance for product-specific fixed package versions.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm whether MySQL versions are 5.5.57, 5.6.37, 5.7.19, or earlier.
  • Check package advisory status against Oracle, Debian, Red Hat, or NetApp guidance.
  • Review database-host access logs for unexpected privileged local access.
  • Verify replication-related deployments are included in asset review.
