Exim supports the use of multiple "-p" command line arguments which are malloc()'ed and never free()'ed, used in conjunction with other issues allows attackers to cause arbitrary code execution. This affects exim version 4.89 and earlier. Please note that at this time upstream has released a patch (commit 65e061b76867a9ea7aeeb535341b790b90ae6c21), but it is not known if a new point release is available that addresses this issue at this time.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2017-1000369 is an Exim mail server flaw affecting version 4.89 and earlier. The CVE states repeated command-line options can leak allocated memory and, when combined with other issues, allow arbitrary code execution. Treat exposed or privileged Exim deployments as urgent until patched or retired. Systems running Exim 4.89 or earlier are in scope. Highest concern is internet-facing mail infrastructure or hosts where Exim runs with elevated privileges. The bundle does not identify affected distributions beyond linked vendor advisories. Prioritize remediation for public mail servers and shared infrastructure. Although active exploitation is not evidenced in the bundle, arbitrary code execution potential in Exim can create business-impacting compromise paths. Mitigation focus: Inventory all Exim installations and identify versions 4.89 or earlier.; Apply vendor security updates from your distribution or Exim upstream guidance.; Confirm packages include the upstream patch commit where vendor status is unclear..
