CVE-2016-9182: Exponent CMS 2.4 uses PHP reflection to call a method of a controller class, and then uses the method name...

Exponent CMS 2.4 uses PHP reflection to call a method of a controller class, and then uses the method name to check user permission. But, the method name in PHP reflection is case insensitive, and Exponent CMS permits undefined actions to execute by default, so an attacker can use a capitalized method name to bypass the permission check, e.g., controller=expHTMLEditor&action=preview&editor=ckeditor and controller=expHTMLEditor&action=Preview&editor=ckeditor. An anonymous user will be rejected for the former but can access the latter.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Exponent CMS 2.4 had an authorization bypass where changing the capitalization of an action name could let an anonymous user reach functionality that should reject them. The public bundle does not include a CVSS score or evidence of active exploitation. Exposure is most likely on internet-facing Exponent CMS 2.4 sites or legacy deployments retaining the vulnerable controller/action handling. The source bundle does not identify CPEs or broader affected version ranges. Treat this as a legacy web application exposure issue. Prioritize internet-facing Exponent CMS 2.4 systems, especially where anonymous users can reach CMS controller routes. Mitigation focus: Identify any Exponent CMS 2.4 deployments.; Review and apply the vendor patch linked in the commit reference.; If fixed version guidance is unclear, check current Exponent CMS vendor guidance..
