CVE-2016-9042: An exploitable denial of service vulnerability exists in the origin timestamp check functionality of ntpd 4...

An exploitable denial of service vulnerability exists in the origin timestamp check functionality of ntpd 4.2.8p9. A specially crafted unauthenticated network packet can be used to reset the expected origin timestamp for target peers. Legitimate replies from targeted peers will fail the origin timestamp check (TEST2) causing the reply to be dropped and creating a denial of service condition.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw can let an unauthenticated network attacker disrupt time synchronization for affected ntpd systems. It does not expose data or change data, but unreliable time can affect authentication, logging, monitoring, and distributed systems that depend on accurate clocks. Exposure is most likely on systems running ntpd 4.2.8p9 or vendor packages based on affected NTP code, especially where ntpd is reachable from untrusted networks. Treat this as a low-severity operational resilience issue. Patch through normal maintenance, but prioritize internet-facing or business-critical time services because clock disruption can undermine logs, alerts, and authentication reliability. Mitigation focus: Apply ntp updates from the relevant vendor advisory for each affected platform.; Check FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Fedora, Apple, and appliance vendor guidance where applicable.; Restrict network access to ntpd from untrusted networks where operationally possible..
