CVE-2016-8940: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (IBM Spectrum Protect) 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 7.1 does not perform sufficient author...

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (IBM Spectrum Protect) 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 7.1 does not perform sufficient authority checking on SQL queries. As a result, an attacker is able to submit SQL queries that access database tables that are not intended for access or use by administrators. The access of these product specific database tables may allow access to passwords or other sensitive information for the product. IBM Reference #: 1998946.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw lets someone who can submit SQL queries in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, later IBM Spectrum Protect, bypass intended authority checks and read product database tables they should not access. The exposed data may include passwords or other sensitive product information, which makes backup infrastructure a serious confidentiality concern. Organizations running IBM Tivoli Storage Manager or Spectrum Protect, especially versions named in the CVE description, should check exposure. The source bundle implies the attacker needs a way to submit product SQL queries, likely through administrative functionality. Prioritize remediation where this product protects critical backups or stores privileged credentials. Even without known active exploitation, exposure of backup system passwords can weaken recovery operations and broader infrastructure security. Mitigation focus: Review IBM advisory 1998946 for affected levels and vendor remediation.; Upgrade or apply fixes according to IBM's official guidance.; Restrict SQL query capability to trusted administrators only..
