CVE-2016-6845: An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8.

An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8. Script code within hyperlinks at HTML E-Mails is not getting correctly sanitized when using base64 encoded "data" resources. This allows an attacker to provide hyperlinks that may execute script code instead of directing to a proper location. Malicious script code can be executed within a user's context. This can lead to session hijacking or triggering unwanted actions via the web interface (sending mail, deleting data etc.).

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2016-6845 is an HTML email sanitization flaw in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8. A malicious email link using base64 data resources could run script in the user’s webmail session, potentially enabling session theft or unwanted mailbox actions. Exposure is limited to organizations running Open-Xchange OX App Suite versions before 7.8.2-rev8, especially where users read untrusted HTML email through the web interface. Prioritize remediation if OX App Suite webmail is still in use on affected versions. The issue is old, but user-session impact is meaningful and could affect mailbox integrity and confidentiality. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Open-Xchange OX App Suite to 7.8.2-rev8 or later vendor-fixed release.; Review the Open-Xchange patch release notes for exact fixed build guidance.; Restrict or sanitize HTML email rendering where immediate upgrade is not possible..
