CVE-2016-6843: An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8.

An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8. Script code can be injected to contact names. When adding those contacts to a group, the script code gets executed in the context of the user which creates or changes the group by using autocomplete. In most cases this is a user with elevated permissions. Malicious script code can be executed within a user's context. This can lead to session hijacking or triggering unwanted actions via the web interface (sending mail, deleting data etc.).

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2016-6843 is a stored script-injection issue in Open-Xchange OX App Suite before 7.8.2-rev8. A malicious contact name could run script when a user adds that contact to a group through autocomplete. The impact is serious because the triggering user may have elevated permissions. Exposure is limited to Open-Xchange OX App Suite deployments earlier than 7.8.2-rev8, especially environments where users manage contacts and groups. The source bundle does not provide CPEs, exact package names, or affected deployment configurations. Prioritize remediation for any still-running legacy OX App Suite instance. The issue can run attacker-controlled script in a privileged user’s session, creating credible risk to email, contacts, and data integrity, even though active exploitation is not documented here. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Open-Xchange OX App Suite to 7.8.2-rev8 or a later vendor-supported release.; Review the Open-Xchange patch release notes for exact fixed packages and deployment instructions.; Restrict contact and group administration to trusted users until remediation is confirmed..
