CVE-2016-6606: An issue was discovered in cookie encryption in phpMyAdmin.

An issue was discovered in cookie encryption in phpMyAdmin. The decryption of the username/password is vulnerable to a padding oracle attack. This can allow an attacker who has access to a user's browser cookie file to decrypt the username and password. Furthermore, the same initialization vector (IV) is used to hash the username and password stored in the phpMyAdmin cookie. If a user has the same password as their username, an attacker who examines the browser cookie can see that they are the same - but the attacker can not directly decode these values from the cookie as it is still hashed. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.4), 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.8), and 4.0.x versions (prior to 4.0.10.17) are affected.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This phpMyAdmin flaw could let someone decrypt stored phpMyAdmin cookie credentials if they already obtained a user's browser cookie file. It is not described as remotely exploitable by itself, but exposed database credentials can create serious downstream access risk. Exposure is most likely in legacy phpMyAdmin deployments on the named affected branches, especially where administrator browsers or profiles could be accessed by malware, shared systems, backups, or endpoint compromise. Treat as a targeted credential exposure risk rather than a broad internet worm risk. Prioritize old phpMyAdmin deployments because stolen database credentials can escalate into data access, even when initial cookie access requires another compromise. Mitigation focus: Upgrade phpMyAdmin to 4.6.4, 4.4.15.8, 4.0.10.17, or later supported vendor packages.; Follow phpMyAdmin and distribution security guidance for branch-specific updates.; Expire existing phpMyAdmin sessions and cookies after remediation..
