CVE-2016-6592: A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Download Manager versions prior to 5.6.

A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Download Manager versions prior to 5.6. A remote user can create a specially crafted DLL file that, when placed on the target user's system, will cause the Norton Download Manager component to load the remote user's DLL instead of the intended DLL and execute arbitrary code when the Norton Download Manager component is run by the target user.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This issue lets an attacker’s DLL run through Norton Download Manager if that file is already placed on a user’s system and the component is launched. It is not described as a direct internet-facing server compromise. Business urgency depends on whether older Norton Download Manager installations remain on endpoints. Likely exposure is limited to endpoints with Norton Download Manager 2016 or other versions before 5.6 installed. Organizations without this legacy component are unlikely to be affected. The bundle does not identify server products, cloud services, or other Symantec/Norton components as affected. Treat this as a targeted legacy endpoint risk, not an emergency internet-wide exposure. Prioritize fast inventory first, then upgrade or remove affected installations. Escalate only if older Norton Download Manager versions are present on sensitive user workstations or broadly deployed. Mitigation focus: Inventory endpoints for Norton Download Manager installations before version 5.6.; Update Norton Download Manager to version 5.6 or later where vendor guidance supports it.; Remove the legacy component where it is no longer required..
