CVE-2016-5551: Vulnerability in the Solaris Cluster component of Oracle Sun Systems Products Suite (subcomponent: NAS devi...

Vulnerability in the Solaris Cluster component of Oracle Sun Systems Products Suite (subcomponent: NAS device addition). The supported version that is affected is 4.3. Easily "exploitable" vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Solaris Cluster executes to compromise Solaris Cluster. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Solaris Cluster accessible data. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 3.3 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).

Analyst readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2016-5551 affects Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.3. An unauthenticated attacker who can log on to the infrastructure where Solaris Cluster runs could, with required human interaction, gain unauthorized read access to some cluster-accessible data. Business urgency is usually limited unless Solaris Cluster protects sensitive operational data.

Executive priority

Treat as a low-priority remediation item unless Solaris Cluster 4.3 remains in use around sensitive operational data. The main risk is limited unauthorized data read, not system takeover or availability loss, based on the provided sources.

Technical view

The flaw is in Solaris Cluster's NAS device addition subcomponent. The CVSS vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N: local access, low attack complexity, no privileges, user interaction required, and low confidentiality impact only. Sources identify Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.3 as affected.

Likely exposure

Exposure appears limited to environments running Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.3 where an attacker can log on to the same infrastructure. Internet-facing exposure is not indicated by the sources. Organizations without Solaris Cluster 4.3 are not shown affected in the provided evidence.

Exploitation context

The bundle does not show active exploitation, public exploit use, or CISA KEV listing. The source description says exploitation requires local infrastructure logon and human interaction by someone other than the attacker.

Researcher notes

Key constraints are local attack vector, no privileges required, user interaction required, unchanged scope, and confidentiality-only impact. The bundle names only Solaris Cluster 4.3 and does not provide detailed root cause, exploit mechanics, or definitive remediation text beyond Oracle CPU reference.

Mitigation direction

  • Identify any Solaris Cluster 4.3 deployments in production or support environments.
  • Review Oracle's April 2017 CPU guidance for the vendor-supported fix path.
  • Restrict logon access to infrastructure where Solaris Cluster executes.
  • Limit and monitor administrative workflows involving NAS device addition.
  • Prioritize remediation where cluster-accessible data is sensitive.

Validation and detection

  • Confirm installed Solaris Cluster versions across all hosts.
  • Verify whether Oracle April 2017 CPU updates were applied.
  • Review access controls for users able to log on to cluster infrastructure.
  • Check logs for unusual NAS device addition activity or prompts.
  • Document compensating controls if vendor patch status is unknown.
