CVE-2016-4290: When opening a Hangul HShow Document (.hpt) and processing a structure within the document, Hancom Office 2...

When opening a Hangul HShow Document (.hpt) and processing a structure within the document, Hancom Office 2014 will attempt to allocate space for a block of data within the file. When calculating this length, the application will use a value from the file and add a constant to it without checking whether the addition of the constant will cause the integer to overflow which will cause the buffer to be undersized when the application tries to copy file data into it. This allows one to overwrite contiguous data in the heap which can lead to code-execution under the context of the application.

Security readout for executives and security teams

A malicious Hangul HShow presentation file can make Hancom Office 2014 miscalculate memory size, then overwrite heap memory while the file is opened. The reported impact is code execution inside the application. Business urgency is highest where users still open .hpt files from email, web downloads, or external partners. Exposure appears limited to Hancom Office 2014 VP Trial HShow.exe 9.1.0.2176 with HncBM90.dll 9.1.0.2291, especially systems that process .hpt files. The bundle does not identify broader versions or platforms. Prioritize removal or containment if the affected Hancom Office version is present. This is a legacy document-parser code-execution issue, so risk depends heavily on whether users can receive and open untrusted .hpt files. Mitigation focus: Check Hancom and Talos guidance for fixed or unaffected versions.; Retire or upgrade affected Hancom Office 2014 installations where possible.; Block or quarantine untrusted .hpt attachments and downloads..
