CVE-2016-2840: An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange Server 6 / OX AppSuite before 7.8.0-rev26.

An issue was discovered in Open-Xchange Server 6 / OX AppSuite before 7.8.0-rev26. The "session" parameter for file-download requests can be used to inject script code that gets reflected through the subsequent status page. Malicious script code can be executed within a trusted domain's context. While no OX App Suite specific data can be manipulated, the vulnerability can be exploited without being authenticated and therefore used for social engineering attacks, stealing cookies or redirecting from trustworthy to malicious hosts.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2016-2840 is an unauthenticated reflected cross-site scripting issue in Open-Xchange Server 6 and OX AppSuite before 7.8.0-rev26. A malicious link could run script in the trusted OX domain, enabling social engineering, cookie theft, or redirects. The source bundle does not show KEV listing or active exploitation evidence. Organizations running internet-accessible Open-Xchange Server 6 or OX AppSuite versions before 7.8.0-rev26 are the likely exposure group. Risk is higher where users access OX through trusted corporate domains. Prioritize remediation for externally reachable OX deployments because exploitation needs no login and abuses a trusted domain. This is not marked KEV, so urgency is moderate unless exposure is public-facing or heavily used by employees. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Open-Xchange deployments to 7.8.0-rev26 or later.; Review the Open-Xchange advisory for supported vendor remediation guidance.; Limit external access to affected OX interfaces where feasible..
