An exploitable heap overflow vulnerability exists in the Fiddle::Function.new "initialize" function functionality of Ruby. In Fiddle::Function.new "initialize" heap buffer "arg_types" allocation is made based on args array length. Specially constructed object passed as element of args array can increase this array size after mentioned allocation and cause heap overflow.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2016-2339 is a Ruby heap overflow in Fiddle::Function.new. A specially crafted Ruby object in the argument type array can change array size after allocation, corrupting memory. This matters mainly for legacy Ruby runtimes and applications that expose this path to untrusted input or plugins. Exposure is most likely in legacy Ruby deployments using affected runtime versions and Fiddle. Broad internet exposure is not established by the source bundle; validate whether attacker-controlled Ruby objects, plugins, or inputs can reach Fiddle::Function.new. Prioritize remediation for legacy Ruby systems that process untrusted inputs or support plugins. The issue is old, but affected runtimes are obsolete and memory corruption defects can carry high impact when reachable. Mitigation focus: Upgrade affected Ruby runtimes using vendor or distribution security guidance.; Apply the Debian LTS ruby2.1 update where that package is in use.; Retire Ruby 2.2.2 and 2.3.0 development builds from production..
