CVE-2016-2126: Samba version 4.0.0 up to 4.5.2 is vulnerable to privilege elevation due to incorrect handling of the PAC (...

Samba version 4.0.0 up to 4.5.2 is vulnerable to privilege elevation due to incorrect handling of the PAC (Privilege Attribute Certificate) checksum. A remote, authenticated, attacker can cause the winbindd process to crash using a legitimate Kerberos ticket. A local service with access to the winbindd privileged pipe can cause winbindd to cache elevated access permissions.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw affects older Samba releases and can let trusted or semi-trusted access become more powerful than intended. A remote authenticated user can crash winbindd with a legitimate Kerberos ticket, and a local service with privileged pipe access can cause elevated permissions to be cached. Exposure is most likely in legacy Samba deployments, domain member servers, identity integration hosts, or appliances bundling affected Samba versions. Modern patched distributions are less likely exposed, but old file servers and vendor appliances should be checked. Treat this as high priority if affected Samba versions remain in production identity or file-sharing infrastructure. The vulnerability is old, so current risk depends on legacy systems, missed vendor patches, or appliances carrying outdated Samba. Mitigation focus: Identify Samba hosts running versions 4.0.0 through 4.5.2.; Apply Samba, Red Hat, or appliance vendor updates for CVE-2016-2126.; Check embedded appliances for bundled Samba exposure using vendor advisories..
