CVE-2016-1548: An attacker can spoof a packet from a legitimate ntpd server with an origin timestamp that matches the peer...

An attacker can spoof a packet from a legitimate ntpd server with an origin timestamp that matches the peer->dst timestamp recorded for that server. After making this switch, the client in NTP 4.2.8p4 and earlier and NTPSec aa48d001683e5b791a743ec9c575aaf7d867a2b0c will reject all future legitimate server responses. It is possible to force the victim client to move time after the mode has been changed. ntpq gives no indication that the mode has been switched.

Security readout for executives and security teams

A vulnerable NTP client can be tricked into ignoring real time server replies and accepting attacker-influenced time. Bad system time can disrupt authentication, logging, certificate validation, scheduled tasks, and investigations. The bundle includes vendor advisories but no CVSS score. Exposure is most likely on systems running older ntpd or the listed NTPSec revision as NTP clients, especially where NTP traffic is unauthenticated or can be spoofed between client and server. Appliances and network devices may also inherit exposure through embedded ntpd packages. Treat this as a targeted infrastructure integrity issue. It is not shown as actively exploited in the bundle, but inaccurate time can undermine security controls and incident evidence. Prioritize internet-adjacent, unauthenticated, or business-critical NTP clients running old packages. Mitigation focus: Identify systems running NTP 4.2.8p4 or earlier, or the listed NTPSec revision.; Apply updates from the relevant vendor advisory for each affected platform.; Prefer authenticated and trusted NTP sources where operationally supported..
