CVE-2016-10580: nodewebkit is an installer for node-webkit.

nodewebkit is an installer for node-webkit. nodewebkit downloads zipped resources over HTTP, which leaves it vulnerable to MITM attacks. It may be possible to cause remote code execution (RCE) by swapping out the requested zip file with an attacker controlled zip file if the attacker is on the network or positioned in between the user and the remote server.

Security readout for executives and security teams

Plain-English summary

CVE-2016-10580 affects the nodewebkit node module installer. It downloaded zip resources over HTTP, so someone positioned on the network could replace the download with attacker-controlled content. Sources describe possible remote code execution during installation, but do not provide a CVSS score or confirmed active exploitation.

Executive priority

Treat this as a build-chain risk rather than a broad internet-facing emergency. Prioritize environments that install old JavaScript dependencies, especially CI and developer workstations. Urgency increases if builds run on untrusted networks or produce software distributed to customers.

Technical view

The issue is cleartext resource retrieval in nodewebkit, mapped to CWE-311. All versions are listed as affected. The risk centers on install or update workflows that fetch zipped resources over HTTP, allowing an in-path attacker to tamper with the archive before it is consumed.

Likely exposure

Exposure is most likely in development, build, CI, or packaging systems that install the nodewebkit module and allow it to fetch resources over HTTP. Systems not installing or invoking this package are unlikely to be directly exposed based on the supplied sources.

Exploitation context

The sources describe a man-in-the-middle requirement: the attacker must be on the network path or otherwise between the user and remote server. The bundle does not show KEV listing, known exploitation, public exploit maturity, or a vendor-confirmed patch.

Researcher notes

Evidence is limited to the CVE description and Node Security advisory reference. No CVSS vector, patch version, exploit confirmation, or detailed affected-version boundary is supplied beyond “all versions.” Validate exposure through dependency inventory and build-path behavior before assigning production impact.

Mitigation direction

  • Check the referenced advisory and vendor guidance for supported remediation.
  • Inventory projects, CI jobs, and build images for nodewebkit usage.
  • Avoid installing affected versions on untrusted or interceptable networks.
  • Replace the dependency if vendor guidance does not identify a safe version.
  • Monitor dependency security tooling for updates on this advisory.

Validation and detection

  • Search dependency manifests and lockfiles for nodewebkit.
  • Review CI and build logs for nodewebkit installation activity.
  • Confirm whether installation fetches resources over HTTP.
  • Check whether affected workflows run on shared or untrusted networks.
  • Document any compensating controls around dependency fetching.
