In Android before 2018-04-05 or earlier security patch level on Qualcomm Snapdragon Automobile, Snapdragon Mobile, and Snapdragon Wear MDM9206, MDM9650, SD 210/SD 212/SD 205, SD 410/12, SD 425, SD 430, SD 450, SD 600, SD 615/16/SD 415, SD 617, SD 625, SD 650/52, SD 800, SD 808, SD 810, SD 820, SD 820A, SD 835, SD 845, and SD 850, the response pointer passed from user space to SDMX_process is not checked before it is used. If the given response buffer length is smaller than 16 bytes, the response values will be written to a memory outside the buffer, possibly in the secure memory area.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw affects older Android devices using listed Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms before the 2018-04-05 security patch level. A malformed response buffer could cause data to be written outside its intended memory area, potentially touching secure memory. Business risk is mainly from legacy, unpatched mobile, wear, or automobile devices. Exposure is most likely in legacy Android assets with Qualcomm Snapdragon Automobile, Mobile, or Wear chipsets listed in the CVE and security patch levels before 2018-04-05. Modern or fully patched devices are less likely to be exposed, but OEM firmware status must be verified. Treat this as a legacy device hygiene issue unless asset inventory shows critical unpatched Qualcomm-based Android systems. Priority should rise for unmanaged mobile fleets, automotive deployments, or devices that cannot be patched or replaced. Mitigation focus: Apply OEM firmware with Android 2018-04-05 or later security patch level.; Check Qualcomm, Android, and device OEM advisories for product-specific guidance.; Retire or isolate devices that cannot receive relevant firmware updates..
