CVE-2015-8968: git-fastclone before 1.0.1 permits arbitrary shell command execution from .gitmodules.

git-fastclone before 1.0.1 permits arbitrary shell command execution from .gitmodules. If an attacker can instruct a user to run a recursive clone from a repository they control, they can get a client to run an arbitrary shell command. Alternately, if an attacker can MITM an unencrypted git clone, they could exploit this. The ext command will be run if the repository is recursively cloned or if submodules are updated. This attack works when cloning both local and remote repositories.

Security readout for executives and security teams

A malicious repository can cause vulnerable git-fastclone clients to run attacker-chosen shell commands when recursively cloning or updating submodules. Business risk is compromise of developer workstations or CI machines using git-fastclone before 1.0.1. Exposure is likely limited to environments still using the git-fastclone Ruby gem before 1.0.1, especially developer machines, build automation, or CI jobs that recursively clone repositories or update submodules. Prioritize remediation where git-fastclone is present in CI, release, or developer workflows. The issue can lead to code execution on trusted build or developer systems, but current evidence does not show broad active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Upgrade git-fastclone to version 1.0.1 or later where used.; Remove git-fastclone if it is no longer operationally required.; Avoid recursive clones or submodule updates from untrusted repositories with vulnerable clients..
