A heap-based buffer overflow exists in GNU Bash before 4.3 when wide characters, not supported by the current locale set in the LC_CTYPE environment variable, are printed through the echo built-in function. A local attacker, who can provide data to print through the "echo -e" built-in function, may use this flaw to crash a script or execute code with the privileges of the bash process. This occurs because ansicstr() in lib/sh/strtrans.c mishandles u32cconv().

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw affects old GNU Bash versions before 4.3. A local user who can influence text passed to Bash's echo -e built-in may trigger memory corruption, causing a crash or possible code execution as the Bash process. Exposure is most likely on legacy systems running GNU Bash before 4.3, especially scripts that process untrusted input through echo -e. The bundle does not provide detailed CPEs, so validate against vendor package status rather than product assumptions. Treat this as a legacy-platform cleanup and targeted hardening issue. It is high impact if reachable, but local access and high complexity reduce broad emergency urgency absent exploitation evidence. Mitigation focus: Upgrade GNU Bash to a vendor-supported version newer than affected pre-4.3 releases.; Apply vendor advisories, including Ubuntu USN-4180-1 and relevant F5 guidance where applicable.; Review scripts that pass untrusted data to echo -e and reduce that pattern..
