CVE-2012-3456: Heap-based buffer overflow in the read function in filters/words/msword-odf/wv2/src/styles.cpp in the Micro...

Heap-based buffer overflow in the read function in filters/words/msword-odf/wv2/src/styles.cpp in the Microsoft import filter in Calligra 2.4.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ODF style in an ODF document. NOTE: this is the same vulnerability as CVE-2012-3455, but it was SPLIT by the CNA even though Calligra and KOffice share the same codebase.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is a legacy document-processing flaw in Calligra. Opening a malicious ODF document could crash the application and might allow code execution. The main business risk is old desktop or workstation software handling untrusted office documents. Likely exposure is limited to systems still running Calligra 2.4.3 or earlier, or related KOffice code, especially where users open external ODF documents. Treat this as a legacy endpoint hygiene issue. It becomes more urgent if old Calligra or KOffice systems process documents from email, downloads, customers, or removable media. Mitigation focus: Inventory Calligra and KOffice installations on endpoints and legacy Linux images.; Update affected packages using KDE, Ubuntu, openSUSE, or other vendor guidance.; Remove unsupported Calligra or KOffice versions where business use is no longer needed..
