Heap-based buffer overflow in the read_channel_data function in file-psp.c in the Paint Shop Pro (PSP) plugin in GIMP 2.6.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a PSP_COMP_RLE (aka RLE compression) image file that begins a long run count at the end of the image. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2010-4543.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2011-1782 is a memory corruption flaw in GIMP's Paint Shop Pro image plugin. A malicious PSP image could crash the application and may allow code execution. The sources do not show active exploitation or a CVSS score. Exposure is most likely on systems running vulnerable GIMP packages that open untrusted Paint Shop Pro PSP files. Business risk is higher where image files arrive from external users, email, or shared repositories. Treat as a contained desktop or image-processing risk unless GIMP processes external files at scale. Prioritize patching exposed workstations and any automated workflows that handle untrusted images. Mitigation focus: Apply relevant vendor or distribution security updates for GIMP.; Check Debian DSA-2426 and Mandriva MDVSA-2011:103 guidance where applicable.; Avoid opening untrusted PSP files on vulnerable systems until updated..
