Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in MediaWiki before 1.16.5, when Internet Explorer 6 or earlier is used, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an uploaded file accessed with a dangerous extension such as .shtml at the end of the query string, in conjunction with a modified URI path that has a %2E sequence in place of the . (dot) character. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-1578 and CVE-2011-1587.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is an old MediaWiki cross-site scripting issue affecting versions before 1.16.5 under a narrow browser condition: Internet Explorer 6 or earlier. A remote attacker could cause script or HTML injection through specially handled uploaded files and encoded URL paths. Exposure is most plausible on legacy MediaWiki deployments older than 1.16.5, especially where uploaded files remain reachable and users could access the site with Internet Explorer 6 or earlier. Treat this as a legacy cleanup risk. It is not marked actively exploited in the supplied sources, but any internet-facing pre-1.16.5 MediaWiki instance should be upgraded or retired promptly. Mitigation focus: Upgrade MediaWiki to 1.16.5 or later, or supported current releases.; Apply relevant Fedora or distribution security updates if using packaged MediaWiki.; Check Wikimedia and distribution guidance for any deployment-specific hardening..
