CVE-2009-5068: There is a file disclosure vulnerability in SMF (Simple Machines Forum) affecting versions through v2.0.3.

There is a file disclosure vulnerability in SMF (Simple Machines Forum) affecting versions through v2.0.3. On some configurations a SMF deployment is shared by several "co-admins" that are not trusted beyond the SMF deployment. This vulnerability allows them to read arbitrary files on the filesystem and therefore gain new privileges by reading the settings.php with the database passwords.

Security readout for executives and security teams

SMF through 2.0.3 can allow a forum co-administrator to read files on the server. In shared administration setups, that could expose settings.php and database passwords, turning forum-level access into broader system or data access. Exposure is limited to organizations still running SMF 2.0.3 or earlier, especially with delegated or shared co-admin accounts. Internet exposure matters less than whether untrusted SMF administrators exist. Treat as high priority for legacy SMF deployments with shared administration. If no affected SMF instance exists, no action is needed beyond documenting non-exposure. Mitigation focus: Identify all SMF installations and their exact versions.; Move affected SMF deployments off versions through 2.0.3 using vendor guidance.; Restrict co-admin rights to fully trusted users only..
