Buffer overflow in the set_page_size function in util.cxx in HTMLDOC 1.8.27 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long MEDIA SIZE comment. NOTE: it was later reported that there were additional vectors in htmllib.cxx and ps-pdf.cxx using an AFM font file with a long glyph name, but these vectors do not cross privilege boundaries.

Security readout for executives and security teams

HTMLDOC 1.8.27 and earlier had a buffer overflow that could let an attacker run code if they could get the tool to process specially crafted input. This matters most where HTMLDOC converts user-supplied documents, web content, or print jobs. Exposure is likely limited to legacy systems still running HTMLDOC 1.8.27 or earlier, especially automated conversion services, web backends, or document pipelines that accept untrusted input. Prioritize if HTMLDOC is exposed through customer-upload, email, print, or reporting workflows. For systems without HTMLDOC or without untrusted inputs, urgency is lower but legacy package cleanup is still appropriate. Mitigation focus: Inventory and remove HTMLDOC 1.8.27 or earlier where possible.; Check HTMLDOC vendor and distribution advisories for corrected packages.; Block untrusted document, comment, and font inputs from affected converters..
