CVE-2008-7064: Directory traversal vulnerability in the get_lang function in global.php in Quicksilver Forums 1.4.2 and ea...

Directory traversal vulnerability in the get_lang function in global.php in Quicksilver Forums 1.4.2 and earlier, as used in QSF Portal before 1.4.5, when running on Windows, allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via a "\" (backslash) in the lang parameter to index.php, which bypasses a protection mechanism that only checks for "/" (forward slash), as demonstrated by uploading and including PHP code in an avatar file.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is an old web forum flaw that can let a remote attacker make a Windows-hosted forum load local files as code. If an exposed legacy Quicksilver Forums or QSF Portal instance remains online, compromise of the web application is plausible. Exposure is likely limited to legacy Quicksilver Forums or QSF Portal deployments, especially Windows-hosted instances reachable from the internet. Modern environments are unlikely affected unless old forum software remains deployed. Treat as high priority only if legacy affected software is still exposed. For most organizations, the main task is confirming absence or decommissioning old forum assets. Mitigation focus: Identify any Quicksilver Forums or QSF Portal installations and confirm exact versions.; Upgrade to a vendor-supported version outside the affected ranges where available.; Retire or isolate unsupported legacy installations if no trusted update path exists..
