Heap-based buffer overflow in cygwin1.dll in Cygwin 1.5.7 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a filename with a certain length, as demonstrated by a remote authenticated user who uses the SCP protocol to send a file to the Cygwin machine, and thereby causes scp.exe on this machine to execute, and then overwrite heap memory with characters from the filename. NOTE: it is also reported that a related issue might exist in 1.5.7 through 1.5.19.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is an old Cygwin heap buffer overflow involving filename handling in cygwin1.dll. An authenticated remote user sending a file over SCP to a Cygwin machine could trigger memory corruption and potentially arbitrary code execution. Exposure is most plausible on legacy Windows systems running affected Cygwin builds, especially where Cygwin-provided SCP/SSH file transfer is reachable by authenticated users. Prioritize remediation where legacy Cygwin hosts accept authenticated file transfers. The issue can lead to code execution, but the available bundle does not prove internet-wide exposure or active exploitation. Mitigation focus: Inventory and retire affected Cygwin 1.5.x installations where possible.; Check Cygwin vendor guidance for the fixed or supported replacement version.; Restrict SCP/SSH access on Cygwin hosts to trusted accounts only..
