CVE-2007-3924: Argument injection vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer, when running on systems with Netscape inst...

Argument injection vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer, when running on systems with Netscape installed and certain URIs registered, allows remote attackers to conduct cross-browser scripting attacks and execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a -chrome argument to the navigatorurl URI, which are inserted into the command line that is created when invoking netscape.exe, a related issue to CVE-2007-3670. NOTE: there has been debate about whether the issue is in Internet Explorer or Netscape. As of 20070713, it is CVE's opinion that IE appears to not properly delimit the URL argument when invoking Netscape; this issue could arise with other protocol handlers in IE.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2007-3924 is an old browser-integration flaw involving Internet Explorer and Netscape on systems where specific URI handling is registered. A malicious link could cause unsafe command-line arguments to be passed when Netscape is launched, potentially leading to command execution. The provided sources do not identify current widespread exposure or a named patch. Exposure appears limited to legacy systems running Internet Explorer with Netscape installed and relevant URI handlers registered. The bundle does not provide affected versions, CPEs, supported product status, or current enterprise prevalence. Treat this as a legacy exposure review, not a current emergency, unless the organization still operates IE and Netscape-era systems. Prioritize discovery and removal of obsolete browser integrations. Mitigation focus: Inventory any legacy endpoints with Internet Explorer and Netscape installed.; Remove Netscape and unused navigatorurl URI registrations where business need is absent.; Decommission or isolate unsupported legacy browser environments..
