PHP-Fusion 6.00.306 and earlier, running under Apache HTTP Server 1.3.27 and PHP 4.3.3, allows remote authenticated users to upload files of arbitrary types using a filename that contains two or more extensions that ends in an assumed-valid extension such as .gif, which bypasses the validation, as demonstrated by uploading then executing an avatar file that ends in ".php.gif" and contains PHP code in EXIF metadata.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw affects very old PHP-Fusion sites. A logged-in user could disguise an uploaded avatar as an image while causing the server to treat embedded content as executable PHP. If exploitable, this can turn a low-privileged account into server-side code execution on a legacy web host. Exposure is likely limited to legacy PHP-Fusion deployments at or before 6.00.306 with authenticated avatar upload enabled on similar Apache/PHP behavior. Modern, retired, upgraded, or non-PHP-Fusion systems are not identified as affected by the supplied sources. Treat as urgent if any legacy PHP-Fusion site remains internet-facing. The business risk is server compromise from an authenticated web account, but evidence does not show current mass exploitation from the supplied sources. Mitigation focus: Check PHP-Fusion vendor guidance for the historical fixed release or upgrade path.; Retire or isolate unsupported PHP-Fusion 6.00.306 and earlier installations.; Disable authenticated avatar uploads until remediation is confirmed..
