CVE-2005-0859: PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in CzarNews 1.13b allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP...

PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in CzarNews 1.13b allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via the tpath parameter to (1) headlines.php or (2) news.php. NOTE: some sources have reported the "dir" parameter as being affected; however, this is likely a cut-and-paste error from the wrong section of the original vulnerability report. Also, the news.php version was later reported to be in 1.12 through 1.14.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2005-0859 affects the old PHP-based CzarNews application. If exposed, attackers may be able to make the server load outside PHP code through affected news scripts, leading to arbitrary code execution. The main business risk is compromise of a legacy public website or hosting account. Exposure is most likely in legacy PHP sites still running CzarNews 1.13b, or CzarNews 1.12 through 1.14 where news.php is present. Risk increases when the affected scripts are reachable from the internet. The source bundle does not identify modern package names or CPEs. Prioritize remediation if CzarNews is internet-facing or hosted on shared infrastructure. Although this is an old CVE with no KEV evidence, the potential impact is server-side code execution and public exploit information is referenced. Mitigation focus: Identify and retire unsupported CzarNews installations where possible.; Check vendor or archived advisory guidance before applying product-specific fixes.; Restrict public access to headlines.php and news.php if still required..
