Firefox before 1.0.1 and Mozilla before 1.7.6 allows remote attackers to spoof the SSL "secure site" lock icon via (1) a web site that does not finish loading, which shows the lock of the previous site, (2) a non-HTTP server that uses SSL, which causes the lock to be displayed when the SSL handshake is completed, or (3) a URL that generates an HTTP 204 error, which updates the icon and location information but does not change the display of the original site.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This flaw let a malicious site make older Firefox or Mozilla browsers show a misleading secure-lock state. The business risk is user deception: people could believe they were viewing a protected site when the browser display was stale or incorrect. Exposure is likely limited to obsolete Firefox before 1.0.1 or Mozilla before 1.7.6, including legacy Linux builds referenced by Red Hat and Gentoo advisories. Modern supported browsers are not identified as affected in the bundle. Treat as a legacy hygiene issue unless obsolete browsers remain in production. If they do, prioritize removal because trust-indicator spoofing can support credential theft and fraud workflows. Mitigation focus: Upgrade Firefox to 1.0.1 or later where applicable.; Upgrade Mozilla Suite to 1.7.6 or later where applicable.; Apply relevant Red Hat or Gentoo vendor updates for legacy systems..
