Multiple buffer overflows in Gaim 0.75 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) octal encoding in yahoo_decode that causes a null byte to be written beyond the buffer, (2) octal encoding in yahoo_decode that causes a pointer to reference memory beyond the terminating null byte, (3) a quoted printable string to the gaim_quotedp_decode MIME decoder that causes a null byte to be written beyond the buffer, and (4) quoted printable encoding in gaim_quotedp_decode that causes a pointer to reference memory beyond the terminating null byte.

Security readout for executives and security teams

CVE-2004-0005 affects Gaim 0.75, an instant messaging client. A remote sender could crash the application and may be able to run code through malformed Yahoo or MIME-encoded content. This is mainly a legacy software risk today, but any remaining deployment should be treated seriously. Exposure is most likely on legacy systems still running Gaim 0.75 or unpatched 2004-era distribution packages. The source bundle does not identify modern affected products beyond Gaim 0.75. Prioritize if legacy desktops, kiosks, or archived Linux images still run Gaim. For normal modern environments, urgency is lower, but confirmed exposure should be remediated because remote code execution is possible. Mitigation focus: Identify and remove any remaining Gaim 0.75 installations.; Apply vendor security updates from the relevant Linux distribution advisory.; If updates are unavailable, retire the software or isolate affected hosts..
