CVE-2003-0141: The PNG deflate algorithm in RealOne Player 6.0.11.x and earlier, RealPlayer 8/RealPlayer Plus 8 6.0.9.584,...

The PNG deflate algorithm in RealOne Player 6.0.11.x and earlier, RealPlayer 8/RealPlayer Plus 8 6.0.9.584, and other versions allows remote attackers to corrupt the heap and overwrite arbitrary memory via a PNG graphic file format containing compressed data using fixed trees that contain the length values 286-287, which are treated as a very large length.

Security readout for executives and security teams

This is an old RealPlayer flaw where a malicious PNG image could corrupt memory when processed by affected RealOne Player and RealPlayer versions. For most organizations, urgency depends on whether legacy RealPlayer software still exists on endpoints or embedded systems. Exposure is most likely on legacy Windows workstations, kiosks, lab machines, or archived virtual machines that still have affected RealPlayer or RealOne Player installed or registered as a browser/helper application. Treat as high priority only if affected legacy RealPlayer software is present. Otherwise, record as a legacy exposure check rather than a current enterprise-wide emergency. Mitigation focus: Inventory and remove unsupported RealPlayer or RealOne Player installations.; Check vendor or archival guidance for fixed versions before retaining any legacy installation.; Disable RealPlayer browser plugins and helper associations where removal is not immediately possible..
