lpr on SunOS 4.1.1, BSD 4.3, A/UX 2.0.1, and other BSD-based operating systems allows local users to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack that is triggered after invoking lpr 1000 times.

Security readout for executives and security teams

A very old flaw in the lpr printing utility on SunOS 4.1.1, BSD 4.3, A/UX 2.0.1, and other BSD-based Unix systems let a logged-in user trick the printer program into creating or overwriting files they should not be able to touch. The attacker had to run lpr about 1,000 times to trigger the flaw, so it is a local privilege abuse on legacy Unix systems from the 1990s. Exposure is limited to organizations still running unpatched SunOS 4.1.1, BSD 4.3, A/UX 2.0.1, or similar early-1990s BSD-derived Unix hosts where local shell users exist. Modern Linux, current BSDs, macOS, and Solaris successors are not in scope. Realistic exposure today is essentially museum-grade or embedded legacy appliances. Very low priority for any modern environment. Only relevant if the business still operates 1990s-era BSD or SunOS systems; in that case, retire or isolate them as part of legacy decommissioning rather than as an urgent security response. Mitigation focus: Apply vendor patches referenced in CIAC bulletin E-25a for SunOS, BSD 4.3, and A/UX lpr binaries.; Retire or isolate any surviving SunOS 4.1.1, BSD 4.3, or A/UX 2.0.1 hosts still in service.; Restrict interactive shell access on legacy Unix systems to a small, trusted operator group..
